Japan hit by earthquake measuring 8.9
On 11 March 2011 an earthquake struck north-east Japan, triggering a tsunami. The earthquake measured 8.9 on the Richter scale and is the largest earthquake to hit the country in about 150 years - Officials say more than 1,000 people are thought to have died, with fears that the death toll could rise significantly.
